Lunch Gear for the New Year
For most of you (and me!), the excitement of holidays is wearing off and you are probably heading back to work for 2017.
I have been busy preparing loads of freezables for the lunch boxes, more than usual as my baby Miss Z starts at Kindy this year. We are both beyond excited! This of course means 5 more lunch boxes per week so I have had to be a lot more organised than usual!
Luckily we have been able to test out the new range of gear from SMASH over these holidays. There are some great looking things available, and the good news is – they are not just for kids! The range of gear for Adults and older kids is fantastic – both Himself and I have been really impressed with them. Here are a few highlights which may just tempt you out to pickup some for yourselves!
Himself was the first to test out the Dining at Work Range. Both the lunch plate (pictured here with Roast Chicken & Potato Salad) and lunch bowl (corn & bacon fitters, green beans, tomato and cheese) are a great size, easy stackable, and microwave/freezer/dishwasher friendly. The faux ceramic style makes it look really funky, and the durability is good too. There is a helpful steam valve on the lid and a good seal ensured no leaks.
Big Dad’s need big drinks, so he took on the biggest drink bottle of the lot. It’s HUGE! Enough of a capacity ensured he was hydrated for quite a while before refilling and the flip lid and wide spout just perfect. This one is definitely not for your tiny kids!
The lunch bag pictured here is “The Toolbox”. It’s a double section, flip lid style with both compartments zippered, heaps of space and a great carry handle. All the lunch bags incorporate the Blue IQ, which is an antimicrobial lining that inhibits the growth of uncontrolled bacteria, mould and mildew that can come through normal cleaning.
I must admit to being VERY excited when I pulled these Bento style containers out of the box. I love a good sectioned lunchbox so I was really looking forward to trying this and testing it out. The Bento lunchbox has 5 sections (the middle one sandwich size) and a leak resistant silicone seal. The clip lock lid keeps the food secure. They stack really well in the fridge and i love the fact the lid is semi-clear so i can see what’s inside at a glance.
Sadly though, This box did not really make me as happy as I had hoped. It’s quite long, which means it doesn’t fit in our regular size lunch cooler bags. SMASH do sell a cooler bag that fits – but this cooler bag was too long to fit comfortably in the schoolbags! The middle sandwich size compartment is great but the others are just a bit too small and strangely shaped so it’s hard to fit in simple things like crackers or carrot sticks – you would have to cut them fairly small. All in all I doubt I would buy any more of these.
The lunch cooler bag I tried is just great! A funky design and big enough to hold enough breakfast, lunch and snacks and even a drink. Easy carry handles and plenty of room for ice bricks.
The Cup Mover range is probably my personal favourite. It’s such a great idea, big enough to hold a salad, or soup or my morning muesli and yoghurt, separate sections for dressings, croutons or nuts and built in cutlery.
SMASH as usual have some great products which will definitely make heading back to work and school that little bit easier. I truly recommend you head out, grab a few things that take your fancy and test them out yourself. You just might find that perfect lunchbox – one for all the family!
